Major league baseball has few blacks in management because they can earn more money in other businesses, Houston Astros’ owner John McMullen said in Houston.
“A black who is qualified to be a manager or a general manager can make more money doing something else,” McMullen said. “I offered Joe Morgan the job to manage our club a couple of years ago and he turned us down. Why? Because he was making more money doing other things.”
Astros’ promotions director Karen Williams is the club’s only black in a management position.
But McMullen said the team has had several blacks in management jobs in recent years. They were Jim Wynn, who worked in the ticket department; minor league instructors Bert Campaneris and Paul Blair; and hitting coach Deacon Jones.
