300 Protest Detention of Juveniles by INS
About 300 people representing Catholic and community organizations marched from the Old Plaza Church to the federal building in the Los Angeles Civic Center Monday night, protesting detention of juveniles by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service.
Speakers, who included the Rev. Richard Estrada, chaplain of Juvenile Hall, and the Rev. Arnold Gonzales of Mission San Gabriel, denounced conditions under which immigration officials detain juveniles and the alleged practice of using them as “bait” for their parents, who are arrested and deported if they come in to claim their children.
Carrying banners and signs, mostly in Spanish, critical of the INS and its policies, the marchers carried candles to the steps of the federal building, where petitions protesting the policies and demanding changes were distributed.
