A buffalo that roamed into a housing development went home to the farm Monday after causing a stir in this Washington suburb.

The animal was turned over to Eric Mogensen of Natural Bridge, Va., who purchased it from the Catoctin Mountain Zoo in Thurmont, Md., Montgomery County Police spokesman George Luddington said.

Mogensen was transporting the animal home to Virginia in a horse trailer Sunday. It apparently escaped when Mogensen’s car broke down on the Capital Beltway. Mogensen didn’t notice that the buffalo had fled until he had arrived home, Luddington said.

The animal was captured at a nearby quarry later Sunday by police officers and animal control experts after excited calls from area residents.

Mogensen was found through a tag placed inside the animal’s ear when it was sold by the zoo.
