Henry Cisneros, mayor of San Antonio, Tex., and a possible Democratic vice presidential candidate, will speak Monday and Tuesday at Cal State Fullerton as part of the campus Hispanic Distinguished Lecture Series.

In addition to classroom talks during the two days, Cisneros will give a public address at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Cal State Fullerton’s University Center. The talk, which is free of charge, is on the topic “Chicanos/Hispanics and Politics: Toward the Year 2000.”

Six years ago at the age of 33, Cisneros was elected the first Mexican-American mayor of a major U.S. city. Earlier this month he was reelected to his fourth two-year term.

Cisneros became a national political figure in 1984 when Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale interviewed him as a possible running mate.

Cal State Fullerton officials said the lecture series is designed to showcase the academic achievements of Latinos.

“The series seeks to improve the visibility and contributions of Hispanic role models at the university level,” said Isaac Cardenas, chair of Cal State Fullerton’s Chicano sudies department. “We want to encourage the post-secondary aspirations of the Hispanic community.”
