Four Japanese fishing boats were fired on by a warship of an unidentified country Monday in the Yellow Sea, the Japanese Maritime Safety Agency said Tuesday.

A speeding ship bearing the number 361 and estimated at between 30 and 50 tons, fired machine guns at the No. 1 and No. 2 Tokuhiro Maru without causing damage or injuries to 24 crew members, the agency said.

Earlier Monday, Nos. 81 and 82 Tokuhiro Maru were also fired on by a speeding craft bearing the same number southwest of the South Korean port of Inchon. There were no damages or injuries to the 26 crew members in that incident.

Japanese security sources said the ship was probably either a North Korean spy ship or a South Korean naval vessel taking part in joint military exercises with the United States.
