An 18-year-old honor student at Gardena High School was shot to death early Wednesday as he sat in his pickup truck at a traffic light in Inglewood.

Daniel Lawrence Bonner of Los Angeles was shot once in the chest with a large-caliber weapon at Crenshaw Boulevard and Imperial Highway shortly before 1 a.m., according to Sgt. Harold Moret of the Inglewood Police Department. Moret said Bonner staggered out of his truck and approached an ambulance that had pulled up alongside him and told the crew he had been shot. They administered first aid and took Bonner to Centinela Hospital, where he died at 1:35 a.m., Moret said.

Because of the severity of the wound, police believe that the shooting occurred at the intersection moments before the ambulance happened by.

With school closed for spring vacation, Bonner had spent Tuesday at Magic Mountain with several friends and had just dropped the last of them off when he was shot, Moret said.

The police said that Bonner was not a gang member and that it did not appear that drugs or robbery were involved.

“There is no reason something like this should have happened to this kid,” Moret said.

The police said they have no suspects and are seeking witnesses.
