The so-called “cultural boycott” of South Africa adds some converts: Jonathan Demme and Martin Scorsese have formed Filmmakers United Against Apartheid, asking other directors to join them in petitioning Hollywood studios and other distributors “to cease distribution of all American films in South Africa as long as apartheid (exists).”

Demme told us that from a mailing to 200 directors, 75 have agreed to join. “We’re not planning to make a crusade out of this,” Demme said. “We’re just one more tiny group of voices adding our protest.”

Woody Allen, Norman Jewison and Spike Lee (“She’s Gotta Have it”) reportedly already have restrictions in their studio contracts against South African distribution of their work.

But can’t film act as a consciousness-raising medium for much of the South African public?

“It sure hasn’t helped yet,” Demme replied.
