A government anti-AIDS campaign that uses an animated cartoon involving bees has drawn protests from the Netherlands’ beekeepers.

A commercial on national television shows a bee flying from flower to flower as an announcer states: “There is a disease that spreads through sex.” At the end of the cartoon, the bee falls to the ground dead.

“It’s technically false,” said Ton Kemps, secretary of the Dutch National League of Beekeepers. “A bee doesn’t come to a flower for sex. It comes to get nectar.”

“We feel bees and flowers are too gentle a topic to be associated with AIDS,” Kemps said.
