Escondido
Police shot and killed a man Monday in the 900 block of Fern Street when they responded to a call from someone who was being shot at, police reported.
John Yoakum, 26, of Escondido died in Palomar Memorial Hospital. He was shot once in the chest, Deputy Coroner Charles Kelley said.
Police said an anonymous caller reported that someone tried to shoot him about 4:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of Fern Street. The man called from the 1800 block of East Valley Parkway.
When police arrived in the area, they saw Yoakum allegedly carrying a four-inch revolver, Lt. Earl Callander said. Callander said Yoakum disobeyed officers’s order to halt.
Callander said Officer George Durgin shot Yoakum once. An investigation of the shooting is under way.
