Two disc jockeys have taken Columbia, S.C., officials to task for putting up hundreds of banners welcoming evangelist Billy Graham to town for an eight-day crusade, beginning Saturday. Gary Lee Robbins of WZLD told his morning radio audience he thought the banners (proclaiming “Welcome Billy Graham”) violated the separation of church and state. Then he and co-host Ilene St. James called City Councilman William C. Ouzts, who replied: “We’re not advertising Billy Graham. We’re advertising Jesus Christ.” That response prompted hundreds of calls, pro and con, to the station.
