County : Orange Firm Selected to Design Airport Terminal

Share

Shrugging off requests that it start from scratch, the county Board of Supervisors has picked the Orange firm of Leason Pomeroy Associates to design the new terminal at John Wayne Airport.

The contract for the terminal and the exterior facade of a new parking structure at the airport will be negotiated later, but it is expected to be worth more than $3 million to Leason Pomeroy.

Earlier this month, a coalition of 16 architectural firms urged the supervisors in a letter to revise the conceptual design of the terminal and parking structure.

The conceptual design was done earlier by a different firm, and Leason Pomeroy will come up with more specific plans for the building.

Airport Manager George A. Rebella said three of the 16 architectural firms had unsuccessfully sought to win the contract to design the terminal or parking structure, and he called the protest a case of “sour grapes.”

Coalition members primarily objected to the planned 2,460-foot-long parking structure, which will average 24 feet in height and run parallel to MacArthur Boulevard. They said it had design flaws and possible safety hazards.
