Other Leaders to Be Honored

Seven women, in addition to Ann Shaw, are being honored at today’s YWCA Leader Luncheon XII for their leadership roles in the community. Those receiving Silver Achievement awards:

Patti Mancini, vice president, external affairs/communications for Rockwell International--North American Space Operations, is being singled out for her work in the corporate world. Mancini manages a $23-million budget and oversees external affairs, including public relations, government affairs and customer and community relations.

Entrepreneur Dolores Sanchez is publisher of Eastern Group Publications, a chain of eight weekly newspapers covering East Los Angeles, Monterey Park and other areas. It is the only Latino-owned chain of bilingual community papers in California. She is being recognized in the entrepreneur category.

Screenwriter Fay Kanin is being honored in the field of communications/creative arts; she is a past president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and has won Emmys for “Tell Me Where It Hurts” and “Friendly Fire.”

Architect Norma Sklarek, the first black woman registered as an architect in the country, wins the award in the professions category. She and two partners started their own West L.A. firm last year.

Attorney Rose Ochi is being honored for her public service. She is a graduate of Loyola Law School and has been executive assistant to Mayor Bradley since 1975.

Jeana Yeager, who co-piloted the experimental aircraft Voyager with Dick Rutan, is being noted for her achievements in science.

In the field of volunteer community service, Bettina Chandler wins accolades for her work with the Downtown Women’s Center, where she serves as president of the board. She is also chairman of the board of the Greater Los Angeles Partnership for the Homeless and is a member of the board of the L.A. Philharmonic Assn. and the Coro Foundation.
