Reporting on Education

Share

I would like to thank Pamela Moreland for her recent articles on education issues, especially the one about Sepulveda Junior High School (“Sepulveda School Fields Academic ‘A’ Team;” April 2, 1987).

If highlights and successes regarding public education were reported, instead of the “low lights,” the budget for education that our governor developed would be easily vetoed. Equally important, voter apathy would be replaced with enthusiastic support for continuing outstanding educational programs and improving and / or changing those weaker areas requiring attention. People will begin to understand how important it is to vote on April 14 for school board members who will provide the leadership necessary to support programs that create these highlights.

It is also my sincere belief that if the media reports the positive aspects of education, district staff and the members of the Board of Education would not need to use valuable time and energy being defensive and / or doing what Pamela Moreland has done--highlighting student achievement and illustrating the team effort and results of administrators, teachers, staff and parents to do what is best for young people. Ms. Moreland’s article goes even further by validating the importance of community involvement.

I congratulate Ms. Moreland for her positive focus and sincerely hope that other successes will be featured in the future.
