Former Dodger pitcher Jerry Reuss, whose home and guest house have developed cracks, has filed a $1.3-million claim against the City and County of Los Angeles.

He alleges that building inspectors failed to inspect the property adequately and allowed the home to be built on an uncompacted trash dump.

The claim says Reuss bought the house in 1985, and early this year noticed cracks developing in the cement foundation, pool deck and guest house. The property also has soil erosion problems, and the house began having plumbing and electrical problems, the claim says. Until they can check records, city officials said they do not know if the property had been a landfill at one time, and do not know when the house was built.

The City Council voted earlier this month to deny Reuss’ claim, and referred it to the city’s insurance carrier. The city attorney’s office also said the claim would be referred to Los Angeles County, which contracts with the city to provide building inspection services.

Reuss, 37, was released this spring by the Dodgers. He recently signed with the Cincinnati Reds’ Triple-A farm team in Nashville.
