The Kings Have Fans, Who Are Proud of It

Julie Cart’s summation of the Kings’ season falls a bit short of any real insight and typifies the ignorance shared by the average L.A. hockey reporter.

The Kings entered the season having not made the playoffs the previous year, having major goaltending problems and three unproven rookies. They made the playoffs despite the obvious distraction of losing their coach and leader in mid-season under the most bizarre circumstances. Melanson established himself as an outstanding goaltender and the three rookies turned out to be franchise-type players. The trade for Tom Laidlaw and Bob Carpenter adds what will prove to be strong defensive leadership and another young star scorer.

When analyzing their future, I would say it looks nothing but good. The Kings are two large wings and a defenseman away from being a contender.
