United and American airlines will begin charging $9 more per ticket on flights originating in Chicago to cover the cost of the city’s new 5-cent-a-gallon tax on jet fuel, airline officials said. Beginning next Friday, O’Hare International Airport’s two biggest carriers will slap the surcharge on tickets to cover the taxes that began accruing in October but were not paid while a legal challenge was pending. The surcharge will drop to $5 at both airlines on Jan. 1. It applies only to travelers departing from Chicago.
