Fifteen-year-old Kristie Phillips took the all-around title but the Soviet Union’s superior depth won the women’s team title at the McDonald’s Gymnastics Challenge at Denver.

Phillips, of Baton Rogue, La., finished first on the balance beam and was no worse than fifth in any of the other events. She had 39.525 points, edging 13-year-old Natalia Laschenova of the Soviet Union, who had 39.450 points.
