More than 50 homes in Saugus were evacuated Sunday night after a chemical fire in a nearby vinyl factory released hazardous fumes in the area, authorities said.

Seven employees of the Keysor-Century Corp. were injured in the fire that began shortly before 9 p.m. at the plant in the 26000 block of Springbrook Road, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Don Kanallakan said. Firefighters extinguished the blaze less than an hour later, he said.

The residents were evacuated to a nearby high school, Kanallakan said. The employees were being treated for smoke inhalation at the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, he said.
