“They Might Be Giants.” MCA. $59.95. In modern-day New York City--circa 1971, anyway--Justin Playfair (George C. Scott) thinks he’s Sherlock Holmes. A Dr. Watson (Joanne Woodward) tries to heal him, only to find herself tagging along on his pursuit of Moriarty. It’s a film as oddball as this make-believe Holmes--starting well, lurching into scenes that seem to have dropped in from the theater of the absurd, recovering with charming sequences (notably the one where Watson tries to cook for Holmes) and then going completely haywire in the last quarter-hour. The direction is pedestrian, the lighting shoddy, the music cheesy. Yet this comedy-mystery-curio is still fun most of the way, thanks to the sympathetic zest of its two principle players.
