Founded in the early ‘50s in Gary, Ind., Vee-Jay was the nation’s most successful black-owned record company in the days before Motown, so it’s both fitting and ironic that Motown would put together this 26-song, 68-minute salute. Selections range from such Top 10 R&B; hits as Betty Everett’s “It’s in His Kiss” and Jerry Butler’s “(For) Your Precious Love” to such cult items as a Little Richard track featuring Jimi Hendrix on guitar and a Jimmy Reed tune (“Boom Boom”) later recorded by the Animals.
