New Caledonia’s umbrella separatist group, the Kanak Socialist National Liberation Front, rejected Libyan aid in its struggle to wrest independence from France. A front spokesman said that Yann Celene Uregei, head of a small radical Kanak party and foreign minister for the front, committed “only himself” when he welcomed Libyan aid and called for armed struggle in statements reported by Libya’s official news agency. The reports came amid concern about an increasing Libyan presence in the South Pacific. Members of Uregei’s group were offered training facilities by Libyan leader Moammar Kadafi.
