The 19 members of the 1987-88 Orange County Grand Jury were selected Monday, with only two of them coming from nominations by judges.

Superior Court Judge Myron S. Brown, who is assigned to grand jury matters, told the nominees Monday that he has been bothered by past criticisms that the only way to get on the grand jury is to know a judge.

“I take great pride in refuting that by the reality of what has taken place today,” Brown said.

The new grand jury, which takes office on July 1, consists of 12 men and seven women. They were chosen by lottery from a list of 29 nominees. The nominee list is usually 30, but when County Clerk Gary Granville informed the judge that one nominee had not been given official notice, Brown ordered the drawing from the 29 present.

The 29 nominees included 15 men and 14 women. The names were drawn from what Judge Brown called “a bingo box.”

Among the 19 selected, all but the two nominated by judges were nominated by city and county officials.
