Annette Strauss was inaugurated Monday as the first elected woman mayor of Dallas, the nation’s seventh-largest city, and she called for an end to hostilities between minorities and police.

Strauss, 63, the sister-in-law of former National Democratic Chairman Robert S. Strauss, labeled crime “an immediate and pressing concern” and called for the hiring of 150 additional police officers. She also announced formation of a committee to press for her crime prevention goals.

Strauss won 57% of the vote in an April 18 runoff, ending the costliest mayoral race in Dallas history.
