Long Beach : Two Losses for Cedar House

Cedar House, a center for the prevention and treatment of child abuse, which recently learned that it will have to relocate after 13 years at the same site, has postponed a major fund-raising event and lost its executive director.

“It was a disappointment to everyone, but we are going to continue,” said acting director Jane Weismann, regarding the cancellation of “Still Peeking at the Pike,” a major fund-raising extravaganza slated last month that would have helped raise money for a new site. The event was canceled, Weismann said, due to insufficient advance ticket sales which she attributed to conflicts with other major events. Board members said they hope to reschedule the event, perhaps for the fall.

Claudia Harden, who resigned last week after three years as executive director of Cedar House, could not be reached for comment. Board members would not discuss the resignation, except to say that Harden resigned for personal reasons which had nothing to do with the center’s current financial situation.

“I would say it was an amicable parting,” said Bob Treese, a board member. “I hope we can find someone new and move on to bigger and better things.”
