Long Beach : Gays Buy $1 Million Policy

Participants in the Gay Pride Celebration this month can look forward to guzzling a frosty beer or two since the promoters were successful this week in acquiring $1-million liquor liability insurance.

The Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Inc. on Tuesday withdrew its request to the City Council for a reduction in the $1-million requirement after learning that it could buy insurance from a New York company.

Last year, the 4,000 to 5,000 persons attending the festival had to settle for soft drinks. The group had been unable to buy insurance pertaining to the sale and consumption of alcohol and the city refused to lower the requirement.

For this year’s festival May 16, the group bought $1 million in coverage for $8,725 from New York Insurance Exchange, according to a broker from North City West Insurance Services in San Diego.

The May 17 parade along Ocean Boulevard, watched by 7,000 to 8,000 spectators last year, will not offer alcoholic-beverage sales.
