Dr. Bruce Halstead, an authority on dangerous marine animals, says the sting can produce primary shock, the same response that happens when you have a severe blood loss. Some people may also react to the protein, as they would to a bee sting.

If you get zapped, the best thing to do is to place your foot in very hot water and see a physician. Better yet, shuffle your feet when you enter the water. This stirs the bottom, and usually the ray swims away.
