A Reel Shocker

Share

While being zapped by an electric ray inspired Dick Bray to disprove scientific theory and Jordan to write an ingenious article, most people, I think, would avoid the electric ray next time. Dr. Bruce Halstead, an authority on dangerous marine animals, says the sting can produce primary shock, the same response that happens when you have a severe blood loss. Some people may also react to the protein, as they would to a bee sting.

If you get zapped, the best thing to do is to place your foot in very hot water and see a physician. Better yet, shuffle your feet when you enter the water. This stirs the bottom, and usually the ray swims away.
