A man died after he was shot and run over by a cab, and his brother was wounded when an unidentified man drew a handgun and opened fire during an argument outside a bar, police said Sunday.

Two brothers, Eliodoro Dominguez, 20, and Julian Dominguez, 32, both of Santa Ana, had argued with a third man about midnight Saturday in front of the Mazatlan Bar on Fifth Street, Lt. Jack Nelson said.

“It was some odd argument and the other guy whipped out a handgun and started shooting at the two of them,” Nelson said.

Eliodoro Dominguez fell to the ground after he was struck a number of times by bullets. Then he was unintentionally run over when a cab driver quickly moved the car to avoid the gunman, who had tried to seize his cab, Nelson said.

The cab driver, who was questioned by police, was not held.

Eliodoro Dominguez was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be performed to determine whether he died of gunshot wounds or of injuries from the car accident, Nelson said.

Julian Dominguez, who also was shot, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was in satisfactory condition.

The assailant was described only as a male Latino.
