The Grossmont Union High School District told about 3,000 East County businesses that they will retrain any 1987 high school graduates that have been hired who do not display good educational skills during their job performance.
Supt. Robert Pyle said the district will retrain the graduates if employers complain that the hired graduates lack basic educational skills, such as reading and writing.
Pyle said employers will not have to pay for the district’s retraining program.
“There’s been a great deal of criticism of students not being able to read and write,” Pyle said. “If they hire one of our graduates who can’t perform, they can call us and we’ll train them.”
After meeting with East County business leaders, the district mailed about 3,000 letters to businesses informing them of the program.
Pyle said the district made the offer in response to growing complaints nationwide that a great number of employers have had to retrain high school graduates because the former students lacked necessary skills.
