Manager Garvey Is Poor Padres’ Answer

Share

The scene goes something like this:

It is late June, the Padres are mired deep in the cellar, their winning percentage somewhere around the .230 level, their record a dismal 17-58, and they are at home against Atlanta, in the process of being swept in a three-game series. Jack McKeon has gone on record at least three times in the first three months of the season with a “vote of confidence” for Larry Bowa.

Finally, it happens. An announcement that hope is on the horizon. Steve Garvey will return to the lineup. As a player? Out of the question. As MANAGER!

With all due respect to Larry Bowa, the time has come. When George Argyros assumes control of the team, let’s hope that he sees the wisdom of this move as well. Not only for the team and the fans of San Diego, but for Larry Bowa, a second-year manager who is just not ready to assume control over a major league team. It’s a lot longer from Las Vegas to San Diego than we thought.
