Queen Elizabeth II dissolved Parliament today, kicking off a three-week general election campaign with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher heavily favored to win a third straight term.

Thatcher, the longest-serving prime minister in Western Europe, spent the day quietly at her 10 Downing Street residence, but her opponents began a day of feverish election activity. Virtually all members of the 650-seat house, except the estimated 80 who are retiring, were already on the stump for the June 11 elections. Thatcher, given a 10-point lead in a new poll released today, is not scheduled to campaign until later in the week.
