Keith Clearwater shot two rounds of 64--a total of 12 under par--in Sunday’s 36-hole finale and became the first rookie to win the Colonial National Invitation golf tournament, beating Davis Love III by three strokes at Fort Worth, Tex.

Clearwater, 27, who played on the PGA’s mini-tour last year, completed 72 holes with a 14-under-par 266 total and matched the record for the 41-year-old tournament.

Clearwater, a former BYU player and a resident of Orem, Utah, collected $108,000 from the total purse of $600,000, giving him a $167,744 total for his first season on the PGA Tour.

Ayako Okamoto of Japan rolled in a six-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole to take the lead and went on to win the $225,000 LPGA Chrysler Plymouth tournament at Middletown, N.J., by two strokes.

Okamoto had a final-round, two-under-par 71 and finished the 54-hole tournament with a four-under-par 215.

The victory was the second of the year for Okamoto and raised her 1987 earnings to $136,408, third-best on the LPGA Tour this year.

Second-round leader Colleen Walker had a final-round 75 to finish tied for second at 217 with Jane Geddes.
