An NCAA proposal to reduce scholarships as a cost-cutting measure would put women’s athletics even farther behind, Donna Lopiano, University of Texas women’s athletic director said at a statewide Associated Press Sports Editors convention.
“It’s patently discriminatory and puts women behind the 8-ball,” Lopiano said.
The NCAA’s President’s Commission will meet June 29 at a special convention in Dallas to consider the proposal, which calls for cutbacks in men’s and women’s scholarships in sports other than football.
Lopiano said that in 11 major conferences, women’s scholarships would receive a greater percentage of cutbacks when compared to the men’s programs.
