The American Humane Assn. said Wednesday that it has been unable to find any evidence to substantiate allegations of animal abuse during the filming of “Project X.” The organization’s director, Carmelita Pope, told reporters that a three-week investigation had not produced “a single instance of abuse that can be substantiated.” The process was begun after game-show host Bob Barker complained publicly in April about alleged mistreatment of the film’s chimpanzees. Pope called the allegations “a rumor that somehow grew.” Dr. Martin Dinnes, a veterinarian who said he examined the animals at least eight times during the 81-day shooting schedule, said that he, too, found no signs of abuse. Crew members also told Humane Assn. investigators that the animals were treated well and had a place to play.
