Laguna Beach : Council Vote Keeps Bus Rides Free for Seniors

Share

Senior citizens who have been riding city buses at no charge will continue to do so, thanks to a unanimous vote by the City Council.

Until last year, according to Terry Brandt, municipal services director, federal revenue-sharing payments had been provided to subsidize the fares for seniors on the nine buses of the Laguna Beach Municipal Transit System.

When those funds were cut off, the Orange County Transit District supplied the subsidy of about $9,000.

This year, county funds became unavailable, Brandt said, so the City Council was asked to consider charging seniors 25 cents per ride.

Tuesday night, the council turned down the idea and the city now will pay for the service, which last year provided rides for 39,400 senior citizens.
