The Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies were rained out for the second straight night at Veterans Stadium Wednesday.

Weather permitting, Tuesday’s game will be made up tonight at 4:35 (PDT), and Wednesday’s has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on Aug. 21, when the Dodgers return to Philadelphia.

The Dodgers will continue to push back their pitching rotation and are expected to start Alejandro Pena (0-3) against the Phillies’ Kevin Gross (2-4). Fernando Valenzuela, originally scheduled to pitch tonight, will instead open the series against the New York Mets on Friday night.

“If (Pena) doesn’t pitch (tonight), then it’s another week before his turn comes around again,” Manager Tom Lasorda said. “I think the extra day’s rest will help Fernando, too.”

Meanwhile, second baseman Steve Sax said he would not like to be switched to center field, a move Dodger vice president Fred Claire said he is considering.

“No, I sure don’t like it,” Sax said. “But, yeah, I’d do it. They (management) know I don’t want to go out there. I haven’t talked to Fred about it, but he knows how I feel.”

The Dodgers have renewed their search for a center fielder, and Claire has said there have been no immediate plans to move Sax. The Dodgers have expressed interest in Philadelphia center fielder Milt Thompson and the Phillies in Pena, but Phillie vice president Bill Giles said he most likely will not deal.
