A reward is being offered to anyone who can help police apprehend a man who has stolen more than $5,000 during five bank robberies in San Diego and Encinitas since April 30, authorities said Thursday.

The bank thefts are known as the “bag man series” because of the robber’s penchant for giving a brown paper bag to tellers and demanding that they fill it with money, a police spokeswoman said.

“During the last theft, a peace sign was drawn on the brown paper bag,” she said.

The thief was described as being a white male in his 20s, with dark blond hair and blue eyes, about 5-foot-10 and weighing about 160 pounds, authorities said. San Diego Crime Stoppers has offered a $1,000 reward to anyone who can assist police.

The thefts occurred at the Coast Savings & Loan branches on West Washington Street and Tierrasanta Boulevard; Security Pacific Bank on Clairemont Drive; Bank of San Diego on Ruffin Road, and Bank of America on Encinitas Boulevard in Encinitas.

The man was not armed during any of the thefts, according to the spokeswoman. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 235-TIPS.
