The warden of Soledad Prison has died more than a month after co-workers found him lying on the floor of his home on the prison grounds with a gunshot wound to the head.

Alan Anthony Stagner, 49, underwent five hours of surgery after the incident April 10 but remained in a coma at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. He died May 14, but his death was not reported until Thursday.

Monterey County Coroner’s Sgt. Glen Brown said Stagner, who ran the fourth-largest prison in the state corrections system, died of pneumonia complications stemming from the .38-caliber gunshot to his temple. An official cause of death will be made after various laboratory test results are known.
