Big Largemouth Bass Make Appearance at Vail Lake

Big largemouth bass started showing at Vail Lake Thursday morning. Anthony Manfro of La Verne caught an 11-pound 2-ounce largemouth and Mike Colton of Hemet weighed in a 7-pound 4-ouncer, both caught on top water plugs. Vail also recently yielded a 10-pound 8-ounce bass to Joe Vermilyer of Santa Ana, who used a foot-long brown plastic eel at the lake’s north shore.

Eastern Sierra trout fishermen were snowed out this week by a storm that moved into the area Wednesday.

WILLOW BEACH--Steady catches of rainbow trout between 39 and 40-mile markers reported by bait fishermen. Good trolling results at Ringbolt Rapids. Shore fishing slow.

LAKE MEAD--Fair to good striped bass reports at Vegas and Gypsum washes, Box Car Cove. Anchovies best bait, but some caught with top water lures in rear of coves. Good largemouth bass reports from Temple Bar, Iceberg Canyon.

BULLHEAD CITY--Good striper fishing at dam whitewater, with casting jigs. Fish running 2 to 4 pounds, some in 7-pound class. Good trout fishing on lake, trolling 8 to 10 colors. Largemouth bass fishing good in coves. Catfish improved.

SALTON SEA--Improved orangemouth corvina fishing. Becky Milward, Coachella, 26-4 corvina at Bombay Beach on mudsucker, drifting. Most corvina guides working Desert Shores area. Good croaker action at Bombay area.

LAKE CACHUMA--Good trout fishing at dam at 30-foot depths. Limits reported. Cheese baits best. Bass slow.

LAKE PIRU--Good trout fishing this week for 3 to 5-pound rainbows. Marina-to-dam best trolling route, 8 to 10 colors. Plastic worms, nightcrawlers working for some bass catches, but no limits yet. Good catfish results at dam, north end, with cut mackerel.

LAKE CASTAIC--Bass limits from upper lake this week. Gary Behnke, Van Nuys, 10-8 largemouth with plastic worm. Other species slow.

LAKE ISABELLA--Fair overall for trout, but some good catches by auxiliary dam. Good crappie results at marina. Catfish best bet at Brown’s, Stein coves. Bass slow.

IRVINE--Slow to fair for trout, bass. Some good catfish stringers. Clay Cale, Westminster, 16-12 catfish with cheese bait.

VAIL LAKE--North shore area best bet for bass fishermen. K.C. Spicer, Fallbrook, 4-fish catfish stringer weighing 5-0, 8-4, 8-10, 9-8. Good to very good for bass, catfish.

LAKE SILVERWOOD--Good striped bass week. Many stripers in 9 to 10-pound class weighed in, one at 18-8. Main channel best for drift fishing with anchovies, at 25-foot depths.

LAKE HENSHAW--Bass best bet, with catfish. Lerisa Wilkenfeldt, Azusa, 7-9 largemouth bass. Some bass limits this week.

BISHOP AREA--Light fishing pressure, after mid-week snows. Lower Owens River running low, and caddis fly hatch underway. Good evening fly fishing results. Pleasant Valley Reservoir fair to good.
