Heaton Is Perfect for 6 Innings, Settles for 2-Hitter
Neal Heaton pitched 6 hitless innings before settling for a two-hitter Saturday night, as the Montreal Expos recorded a 6-0 victory over the San Diego Padres.
Tony Gwynn got the first hit off Heaton, a single to right with two out in the seventh. The other hit was Luis Salazar’s bunt with two out in the eighth.
Heaton (5-2) struck out five and walked one. Heaton pitched to the minimum 18 batters through six innings. The only Padre to reach base during that span was Stanley Jefferson, who was hit by a pitch to start the fourth. He was erased on a double play. Jefferson also walked in the eighth.
