NCAA Men’s Tennis : Burrow Victorious in Singles Final; USC Wins Doubles for 19th Time

Andrew Burrow of the University of Miami defeated Dan Goldberg of Michigan, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, Saturday to win the NCAA singles tennis championship.

Rick Leach and Scott Melville of USC won the doubles, defeating Julian Barham and Darren Yates of UC Irvine, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

“He was hitting a lot of lobs and I don’t particularly like that type of game,” Burrow said. “I just stayed back and prepared myself for a long match.”

Goldberg was trying to become the first unseeded player to win the title since Michigan’s Mike Leach did it in 1972. “I started out OK, but in the second set I found myself with a lot of nervous energy,” he said.

“I don’t think I was very tired physically, but mentally I was beginning to wear down.”

Burrow becomes the first singles champion from Miami since Pancho Segura won three straight, 1943 through 1945.

Leach and Melville become USC’s 19th doubles title team, more than any other school. Leach teamed with Tim Pawsat to win it last year.
