California Lutheran University, founded in 1960, is a private liberal arts college in Thousand Oaks. Commencement exercises were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mount Clef Stadium on campus, 60 W. Olsen Road. Jazz musician Artie Shaw, 77, described as the clarinet-tooting symbol of American youth during the swing era, was commencement speaker. Shaw became a national music figure in 1938 when he recorded the classics “Begin the Beguine” and “Frenesi.” His topic was “Three Chords for Beauty--One to Pay the Rent.”

Degrees: 400 diplomas awarded, including 145 graduate degrees.

Honorary Degrees:

Artie Shaw, musician, doctor of humanities.

John Crean, chairman of the board, Fleetwood Enterprises, Riverside, doctor of laws.

Dr. Fran Burnford, assistant to the bishop, South Pacific District, American Lutheran Church, doctor of divinity.

Ruth Myli, assistant to the bishop, Pacific Southwest Division, Lutheran Church of America, doctor of divinity.
