Grants to Boost Teacher Science Know-How
Secretary of Education William J. Bennett on Sunday announced 25 grants totaling $1.9 million to boost teachers’ understanding of math and science.
He said the grants have been dedicated to the memory of Sharon Christa McAuliffe, the Concord, N.H., teacher killed in the Jan. 28, 1986, explosion of the shuttle Challenger.
Bennett said the grants are intended to “help teachers recharge their intellectual batteries by studying under the direction of distinguished scientists, scholars and professionals.”
The winning projects were selected from 383 proposals. Many involve summer training workshops at universities, science museums and other sites. UCLA and the Los Angeles Unified School Distr1768125472three two-week summer institutes and 10 monthly follow-up meetings for 60 high school science teachers.
The grants are from Bennett’s discretionary fund. He came under fire from teacher groups earlier this year when he proposed abolishing a separate $2-million fellowship program named in McAuliffe’s honor.
