A powerboat racer died after his craft struck an overturned boat at 90 m.p.h. early in the first race of the International Outboard Grand Prix on the St. Johns River at Jacksonville, Fla.
David Merrill, 32, of Islamorada, Fla., was pronounced dead on arrival at University Hospital of massive head and internal injuries, police said.
The accident occurred during a race near downtown Jacksonville of 21 tunnel-hull boats, which were equipped with 245-horsepower outboard engines.
