San Pedro : Building Named for Gibson
The old San Pedro City Hall, a seven-story government building at 638 S. Beacon St., has been renamed the John S. Gibson Jr. Municipal Building in honor of the longtime Los Angeles City Council president who died April 22 at 84.
The action, initiated by Mayor Tom Bradley, was approved Tuesday by the City Council. A permanent plaque will be placed on the building to commemorate Gibson’s unprecedented career in Los Angeles politics, which spanned 29 years as a councilman and 16 years as council president, said harbor-area Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores.
Flores, a former Gibson aide who succeeded him in office in 1981, called the renaming of the 1928 building, which still houses city and state offices, a wonderful gesture. The building, near 7th Street, overlooks the main Los Angeles Harbor channel, which Gibson helped develop for shipping and commerce when engineers questioned the feasibility of such a project, Flores deputy Bernie Evans said.
Gibson died at his San Pedro home about two weeks after undergoing hip surgery in April. He had been in poor health for several years, Flores said.
