Montebello : Nightclub Expansion OKd

Share

The Montebello City Council has voted 3 to 2 to approve in concept a major expansion of the Quiet Cannon restaurant/dance club and to pay for 350 additional parking spaces at a cost to the city of about $1 million. The proposed expansion includes a new dining room and an enlargement of the facility’s cocktail lounge and dance and banquet facilities.

The City Council also tentatively approved extending by 20 years the Quiet Cannon’s 25-year lease agreement, signed in 1978, City Administrator Joseph M. Goeden said.

Councilmen William M. Molinari and Edward C. Pizzorno opposed the project. They criticized because of the additional noise the expansion would create for local residents and the financial return the city would receive on its investment. The city owns the restaurant facility and leases it to the operators of the Quiet Cannon--a partnership.

Quiet Cannon and city officials estimate the expansion would attract business and bring to Montebello an additional $200,000 a year in lease and tax revenue, Goeden said. The city administrator also said the improved restaurant facility would help the city attract a major hotel to the area.

An environmental impact study must be completed before the expansion project is returned to the City Council for final approval, Goeden said.
