Excise Taxes

The letter from Mario G. Obledo (May 14), which opposed an increase in excise taxes on gasoline, liquor and cigarettes, fails to consider that neither liquor nor cigarettes are necessary to sustain life. As a matter of fact, they are conducive to shortening life. Gasoline taxes might be a burden, but low-income people often do not have automobiles and/or do not drive long distances.
