Fish sampled at five different locations in the San Jose area have been found to contain concentrations of mercury exceeding the health standards set by state and federal agencies, the state Water Resources Control Board announced. Other mercury-tainted fish were discovered in creeks or reservoirs in Solano, Yolo, Sacramento, Tuolumne and Colusa counties during a monitoring program for toxic substances carried out in 1986. Water board spokeswoman Sandra Salazar said the information was turned over to the Department of Health Services. “They are the ones who decide whether a public alert is necessary,” Salazar said.
