About 400 Buddhist monks and 100 Buddhist students scuffled with South Korean riot police at Kaeun Temple in Seoul after the police blocked the monks from leaving the temple during an anti-government protest. No serious injuries were reported in the hourlong clash. The monks and students, protesting a May 18 tear-gas attack on a Buddhist temple in Kwangju, chanted “Down with military dictatorship!” as they scuffled with 150 riot police. Elsewhere in Seoul, 100 supporters of dissident Kim Dae Jung demonstrated in front of his house to press for his release after 53 days of house arrest.
