The barge load of garbage turned away by six states and three foreign countries was given permission to tie up today at a federal anchorage, clearing the way for its tugboat to depart after a 71-day odyssey.

The tug Break of Dawn requested and received permission from the U.S. Coast Guard to move the barge to an anchorage in the Hudson River north of the George Washington Bridge, said Coast Guard spokesman Brad Terrill.

After spending 48 hours at the anchorage to make sure the barge is secure, the tugboat will be free to go, Terrill said. He said another tug could pick up the barge once the final destination of the garbage is determined.

He said he did not know when the barge will get under way.

The tugboat has accompanied the barge since March 22 in search of a place to deposit the 3,100 tons of baled trash stacked on its deck. The barge began its journey in nearby Islip and has sat in New York Harbor for two weeks.
