Junior College Students Older, Going Part Time
California’s community college students have become increasingly part time and older, the state community college chancellor’s office reported.
The student profile report for the two-year college’s board of governors indicates that students under 24 years old constitute about 42% of the total enrollment.
“We have more and more students in the 39-and-older category,” said Mick Holsclaw, who prepared the report. “The traditional college student--22 and younger--is decreasing, while the re-entry college student is on the rise.”
Full-time students--those taking 12 or more units a semester--make up about 21% of the total enrollment, while those taking fewer than six units constitute 40% of the student population.
